What is Skin-to-Skin?

Three mothers with nesting days

What is Skin-to-Skin Anyways? Skin-to-skin, or "kangaroo care" means holding your baby without any clothing separating you.

For baby:

  • Boosts oxytocin levels and lowers cortisol (more love and less stress)
  • Helps stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels
  • Stimulates innate newborn reflexes
  • Aids in learning baby’s cues
  • Less colic and reflux
  • Greater weight gain - healthier baby!

For mom:

  • Boosts oxytocin levels and lowers cortisol (more love and less stress)
  • Better sleep (less fussy baby)
  • Easier Breastfeeding
  • Reduced likelihood and severity of postpartum depression

Great for Preemies

Babies born prematurely can benefit immensely from kangaroo care. In fact, doctors recommend that preemies get at least some skin-to-skin contact every day.
